Stress and the brain

We read conflicting reports about stress and the effect of it in the popular press.

Sometimes we read that stress is very bad for you in any form at all. Whilst at other times we see that so-called 'moderate stress' is actually good for you, in the sense it can help you to achieve your best, and that many also get an adrenalin rush and thrive under a bit of stress.

Indeed, some workers attest that they get bored without a little stress in their job, and that they get great satisfaction when they complete a task when there is a certain level of pressure or time constraint to deliver against, and get 'itchy feet' if things are too easy for them.

However, it does seem that 'chronic stress' according to some scientific literature, has an impact on health in general which, as the brain is part of the body, presumably is affected by the knock-on impact that chronic stress has on the body. In other words the bad effects on the body of chronic stress are also passed onto the brain.

Overall it would seem that the common sense attitude is a fair one - a little stress is not a problem (and controversially some would anecdotally suggest could actually be a good thing), but as soon as levels get uncomfortable, then it is uncomfortable for all parts of you, including your brain.
